From the beginning of the year in the sphere of defense in Azerbaijan 17 people died

In the first quarter 2014 losses of defense and security sector in Azerbaijan amounted 17 people, 12 people were killed or died in non-combat conditions,  according to military research Journalism Center "Doctrine."  
Six soldiers committed suicide ( hanged , shot ) , three died in car accidents, and three  soliers  died from disease.
Another 25 people  were wounded or injured, 21 - in non-combat conditions, - Turan.

 

ODIHR. Report Expert Meeting on Human Rights Monitoring in the Armed Forces, Warsaw, 4-5 March 2013

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) hosted the Expert Meeting on Human Rights Monitoring in the Armed Forces on 4 and 5 March 2013. In total, 24 representatives from civil society, military associations, ombuds institutions and academia from across the OSCE region exchanged experiences and good practices in monitoring and protecting the rights of service personnel.

1st December is Prisoners for Peace Day. For over 60 years, War Resisters' International have, on this day, made known the names and stories of those imprisoned for actions for peace. Many are conscientious objectors, in gaol for refusing to join the military. Others have taken nonviolent actions to disrupt preparation for war.
This day is a chance for you to demonstrate your support for those individuals and their movements, by writing to those whose freedom has been taken away from them because of their work for peace.

Reserve Officers Call to End the Unhealthy Environment around the Army

The Union of Officers in Reserve and Retired released a statement on the situation that prevails in the armed forces after the resignation of Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, describing the situation as unhealthy.
In a statement sent to the media by the Union’s Chairman Yashar Jafarli, it is noted that instead of discussing the activities of Abiyev as Defense Minister, public discussions are sent in the wrong direction. This should be seen as an attempt by political power to not take responsibility with the unhealthy situation prevailing in the army.

Yashar Jafarli, head of the Public Association of Reserve and Retired Officers, addressed the heads of the Interior Ministry and the National Security Ministry in connection with continued anonymous threats he has been receiving.

The head of the Public Association “Officers in Reserve and  Retirement” Yashar Jafarli appealed to U.S. President Barack Obama  calling to  express  attitude to the visit of Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev to the United States.
The appeal states that Abiyev for 19 years has served as defense minister and over the years he has systematically violated the rights of military personnel and their families, signed orders that  are contrary to the Constitution and laws of Azerbaijan.

Non-combat losses of defense and security sector in Azerbaijan amounted to 41 people

Since the beginning of the year the losses of defense and security sector in Azerbaijan amounted to 49 people, according to the Center of journalistic military research "Doctrine" on the basis of media monitoring.
Eight people   were killed by Armenians, and 41 - non-combat losses.
Six people died in an accident (drowning, fell, remained under the tank, electric shocks), nine were killed in car accidents, three were killed in a helicopter crash, five died from disease, and 10  committed suicide.

Protests against Deaths of Soldiers in Azerbaijan

About 3 thousand people were protesting at Fountain Square in Baku on  March 10. The number of participants has increased due to the victims' relatives and new groups of young people, who continue to come to the area from all sides. The police could not stop them.
At the same time, police detained some protesters, put them in cars and took away. However, despite the hundreds of police officers, their powers were not enough to prevent the action.

Society should more actively deal with problems in the army

A debate on the problems of the Armed Forces took place on Friday in the office of the Classic Popular Front Party.
Despite criticisms in the media and serious problems, army leadership does not make any conclusions, and the situation has not changed. For this reason, the number of deaths in the army is growing every year, noted the panelists.
The head of the NGO "Religion, Democracy and Human Rights" Aytekin Imranly called the situation in the army very bad, despite the fact that budgetary funding to the army is growing every year.

Azeris Defy Protest Ban Using Facebook to Rally Over Army Death

Azeri protesters defied a ban on demonstrations to rally against violence in the former Soviet republic’s army after a conscript died this week. About 50 people were taken into police custody.

The activists, who gathered support through the Facebook Inc. (FB) social network, chanted “Stop killings of soldiers” and “Stop turning the army into a morgue” while marching through Fountains’ Square and central Baku today before riot police dispersed them.
